This article examines shifts in the strategy of contemporary social movements. Using the intersection of the Zapatistas and indymedia, I make two interrelated arguments: First, we have seen a fundamental transformation in the way social movement organizations function, which places communication technology and media practices at the center of resistance. Second, I argue this new logic of resistance that grows out of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation leads to important innovations as well as limits in the operation of contemporary movements.

This essay builds on research concerning net worked activism, utilizing Couldry’s theory of media pilgrimage to examine an activist event coordinated by a new social movement network, which was an ‘‘alternative media pilgrimage’’ to the Zapatista communities in Chiapas, Mexico. Using ethnographic narrative excavation, qualitative content analysis, and fantasy theme analysis, I explored resistance in testimonial narratives presented in Zapatista communities, as well as the rhetorical vision used by activists to make sense of such resistance. The research showed that the activists used a rhetorical vision based on conceptual narratives about ethical consumerism, which acted as a discursive blindfold hiding the resistance found in the Zapatistas communities and reinforced the resistance found in the alternative media world of new social movement networks.

En el presente artículo, se busca comprender la evolución de la ciudad de Toluca en el marco del actual gobierno, para posicionarla como una ciudad global. Pensar las ciudades como acontecimientos públicos es mirarlas como un espacio de comunicación, con una configuración heterogénea, dinámica y tensionada por un conjunto de procesos de carácter local y global. La tríada ciudad-radio-jóvenes representa una guía para acercarnos a lo que sucede en el espacio urbano. En una ciudad que aspira a entrar a las denominadas ciudades globales; donde la Toluca de ayer, de hoy y de mañana ha visto pasar decenas de generaciones, unos acarician ilusiones, otros que soñaron con el futuro, algunos que viven el presente.

The amount of coverage the media dedicate to climate change, along with how they frame the issue, can influence audience awareness, perception, and understanding of climate change. These aspects of climate change coverage have varied among countries, and few studies have analyzed coverage by Mexican media. This study analyzed 1047 climate change stories published by the Mexican newspaper El Universal from 2007 and through 2015. Three research questions were addressed: (1) If the amount of climate change coverage in El Universal varied over time, with what events, if any, did these changes appear to be associated? (2) What frames has El Universal used in its stories about climate change? (3) If El Universal attributed information to specific sources, what sources did it identify? Stories analyzed were identified and accessed through the LexisNexis database.

This dissertation explores the experience of indigenous activists as they attempt to use the Internet and Internet-enabled alliances with global civil society to negotiate their conflicts with state and local governments in the southern state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Drawing on communication and globalizations studies,as well as anthropological literature, this case study sheds light on indigenous conceptualizations of and experience with identity politics, integration into what have been described as “new social movements,”and the shifting state powers that have come with the acceleration of economic and political globalization.

The 1994 Zapatista uprising in Chiapas, Mexico, created a rupture with a series of neoliberal policies implemented in Mexico and on a global scale over the last few decades of the 20th century. In a moment when alternatives to neoliberal global capitalism appeared to have disappeared from the world stage, the Zapatista Army for National Liberation (EZLN) initiated a movement and process that would have significance not only in Chiapas and for Mexico, but for many struggles and movements around the world that would come to identify with a kind of “alter globalization” project. This dissertation examines the historical moment of neoliberal globalization, what the EZLN calls the “Fourth World War,” the Zapatista initiative to construct an alternative political project, and the importance of this process of rupture and construction for our understanding of social organization, political participation, struggle and subjectivity.

La presente tesis propone un modelo de auditoría de comunicación integral denominado MACI, que surge de la revisión bibliográfica y de la aportación de dos modelos básicos: “la teoría de sistemas” y “la comunicación productiva”, tomando esencialmente sus aportaciones enfocadas a evaluar las diversas dimensiones que confluyen hacia la calidad de las organizaciones. Asimismo, MACI se diseñó con el propósito de contar con un modelo que, de acuerdo al contexto, se aplique a organizaciones mexicanas y contribuya de forma específica a identificar las áreas de oportunidad respecto a su comunicación. El modelo de auditoría de comunicación integral denominado MACI se aplicó en dos organizaciones, la primera del tipo público, a la que se le denominó OP y la segunda del tipo privada, identificada como OPR.

Los cambios vertiginosos de las últimas décadas han transformado a la sociedad moderna industrial al grado de que ya es comúnmente aceptado que se vive en un nuevo tipo de sociedad y en una nueva era, la de la información. La mutua y cada vez más dinámica interrelación mundial entre las comunidades se ha visto impulsada por el avance tecnológico, sobre todo en el ámbito de las comunicaciones, así como por el intercambio económico y financiero, fenómeno al que usualmente se le conoce como globalización. Este complejo proceso está modificando y alterando la naturaleza de las sociedades, instituciones y naciones por lo que requiere ser investigado más allá de la apreciación subjetiva y el tamiz ideológico que ensalza o condena sin más tanto a la sociedad de la información como a la globalización.

Referirnos al TLC y su posible impacto en la cultura nacional es encontrarnos en terreno movedizo, inseguro. Ello no en razón de una "indefensión" absoluta frente al flujo cultural de nuestro "vecino distante", o en función de una supuesta "debilidad" de nuestras raíces culturales. Sin embargo, hoy la inquietud responde al hecho de una real vulnerabilidad de la estructura cultural actual mexicana, principalmente entre ciertos sectores sociales.
