The defeat of the longstanding PRI party in the presidential elections of year 2000 has been acknowledged as a milestone in the democratisation of Mexico. Nevertheless, for over 40 years, many authors have suggested that Mexico has been undergoing a democratic transition. These repeated assertions highlight just how difficult it is to define a democratic transition or when or how such a process begins or ends. Media theorists have been intrigued as to what changes a media system goes through when experiencing a democratic transition, as new political arrangements have an impact on the dynamics of journalism and newsmaking. This study aimed to examine to what extent the close relationship that the media and the government traditionally held during the PRI regime had changed as a product of political transformations. This research adopted the concept of political clientelism of a media system as a theoretical framework, in order to identify aspects in which the Mexican media system had altered from how it occurred in the past. The study relied on the use of two types of qualitative research methodologies, interviews with Mexican journalists, as well as content analysis of newspaper articles.

The impact of technology in society nowadays has led to significant curricular reforms around the world that aim to achieve a higher quality in education. Mexico has not been the exception and in 2008, the Reforma Integral de la Educación Media Superior, RIEMS (the Comprehensive Reform of Upper Secondary Education) was launched with the aim to overcome three challenges in upper secondary education in Mexico: access to education, quality and equity. The proper development of this educational level would represent a fundamental assumption that the country could respond to the challenges of the global economy in a context of equity and diversity. In this context, the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in schools has become a required tool considered as the necessary action for the qualitative improvement of the teaching and learning process. This provides many possibilities, but also new demands.

USA

In the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, many indigenous communities further their struggles for greater political and cultural autonomy by working with transnational non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Communication technology (what I call comtech) is increasingly vital to these intersecting socio-spatial relations of activism and advocacy. In this dissertation, I examine how comtech offer indigenous individuals and organizations with the means for visualizing their political-cultural agendas. Approaching the access and use of comtech, especially video technologies, as a partial and situated technoscience, I inquire into how and why these activities reconfigure the production and evaluation of authoritative knowledge about indigenous peoples, places, and practices. More specifically, I undertook an organizational ethnography of a small intermediary NGO comprised of individuals who self-identify as indigenous and others who do not, Ojo de Agua Comunicación Indígena, which endeavors to place communication technologies (especially video equipment) at the disposal of indigenous communities.

This dissertation analyzed how the media on both sides of the U.S. - Mexico border portrayed the issue of gun traffic king’s into Mexico and its impact on Mexico’s border violence. National newspapers from both sides of the U.S.- Mexico border were analyzed from January 2009 through January 2012, The New York Times for the U.S. and El Universal for Mexico, which resulted in a sample of 602 newspaper articles. Qualitative research methods were utilized to collect and analyze the data, specifically content analysis. Drawing on a theoretical framework of social problems and framing this study addressed how gun trafficking along the U.S.-Mexico border impacted the drug related violence that is ongoing in Mexico, how gun trafficking was portrayed as a social problem by the media, and how the media depicted the victims of drug related violence.

Esta tesis doctoral constituye un trabajo de investigación descriptivo en la disciplina de educación. El objetivo general ha sido conocer las percepciones de profesores y alumnos de la Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua (México) sobre el aprendizaje colaborativo y la mediación de las TIC (Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación) en dicho proceso, así como sus experiencias de trabajo colaborativo. En primer lugar, se presenta una revisión teórica acerca de las temáticas referentes al aprendizaje colaborativo, el aprendizaje colaborativo mediado por TIC (mejor conocido como CSCL por sus siglas en inglés) y los diversos aspectos relativos a la implementación del CSCL en la educación superior. A continuación, se discuten los resultados obtenidos a través de una investigación con un diseño que integra un enfoque mixto, combinando estrategias metodológicas cuantitativas y cualitativas.

El mensaje que el autor desea comunicar en este libro es "conocer para intervenir". Conocer el proceso de ver televisión, los escenarios donde se realiza, las múltiples mediaciones de que es objeto, así como conocer a las audiencias implicadas en este proceso para proponer estrategias cuya finalidad sea transformar su múltiple interacción televisiva. De modo que ver televisión constituya una experiencia que sin dejar de ser placentera sea cada vez más constructiva, crítica y autocrítica para todos y posteriormente se convierta en un recurso para el fortalecimiento de su educación, su cultura, los derechos a la comunicación, la democracia y la participación ciudadana.

Guadalajara

Para tratar de responder la pregunta ¿qué es lo que saben los niños del libro? las autoras trabajaron con una muestra de 60 niños, de primero, tercero y sexto de primaria, en una escuela privada del Distrito Federal y una pública rural en un poblado del Estado de México, sobre la base de las representaciones gráficas de los niños.

El autor ofrece un texto-síntesis en el que reflexiona con su particular estilo, ajeno a los formalismos académicos pero sin concesiones sobre el quehacer investigativo. El texto surge de la experiencia acumulada, de una concepción de la ciencia en la que el investigador que investiga es motor y parte del proceso de investigación. La relación entre el sujeto que investiga y el objeto de conocimiento, pocas veces explicitada, es una relación no determinada, entre lo configurado y lo configurable.
